Doggone!

Desert Island Supply Co. At Desert Island Supply Company: DOGGONE is an event celebrating the food and culinary institutions of Birmingham, Alabama, through words, food and letterpress.

Featuring artist Frank Brannon and his one-night-only letterpress hot dog stand, DOGGONE was inspired by Frank’s recollections of the now defunct Dino’s Hot Dogs and Hamburgers in Woodlawn. Other writers and artists will present their works about Birmingham’s fine food & food institutions, including writers Tina Mozelle Braziel, Kerry Madden, James Braziel, Shelly Cato, Laurel Mills, David Hornbuckle, Daniel DeVaughn, Katherine Webb, Brandy Yates, Alicia Clavell, Jessica Peterson, Suzanne Gray and more!

DOGGONE will also feature the release of a chapbook of writing from the event.

We are still looking for participants! Pay attentions, all you writers, listeners, eaters, cooks, mixologists… anyone who has a personal love (or obsession) for a food or food institution in Birmingham. All ideas for involvement are welcome.

Upcoming Community Arts Workshops

I’m excited to be working with my collaborators in the nearby communities to set up a series of fall and spring workshops for folks to learn about the Cherokee language, and to support Cherokee language revitalization wherever I can. These workshops will be at Southwestern Community College’s Swain Center and my own studio in Dillsboro, NC. I’ll soon be posting a schedule for these free workshops.

sub rosa: remembering

IMG_0826

Many printers, artists and book artists share their beginnings with Glenn House, Sr., who died on September 14th, including SpeakEasy Press. I take a moment from my usual thoughts of printing, papermaking, teaching and making art to remember a person who helped many of us begin those very thoughts.
